Assessment of healthcare waste management practices among healthcare workers at two hospitals in Abuja, Nigeria

Healthcare waste (HCW) is generated from hospitals or healthcare related facilities and considered a major source of environmental contamination because it made up potentially harmful substances. In developing countries, especially Nigeria, management HCW becoming an issue concern. The main objective this study was to assess the current practices at two in Abuja, Nigeria. This cross-sectional conducted June July 2018 among randomly selected workers (HWs) practising using electronic interviewer-administered questionnaire installed on smartphone via open data tool kit. We evaluated segregation assessed knowledge HWs regarding one public secondary private tertiary health facility. status practice carried out following criteria: (responsibility, segregation, storage packaging); transport; recycling reuse; treatment final disposal. Data gathered were analysed by performing descriptive statistics. Of 105 interviewed, 69 (65.7%) females mostly (44.8%) within age group 31-40 years. proportion respondents who had received specific training 17.1% (18/105). level both found be 2: operating manner with some aspects that are sustainable.
